Munich Airport Resumes Operations Post Heavy Snowfall
After facing an unprecedented snowfall on Saturday, December 2nd, Munich Airport, Germany’s second-largest air hub, resumed operations in the early hours of the following day. The city experienced an unusually large amount of snow for early December, reported by local news media as the most substantial daily snowfall in Munich in December since records had been kept. The severe weather conditions prompted officials to shut down the rail station in the city, and the police advised drivers to stay off the roads for safety reasons.
Flights at Munich Airport started taking off again around 6 a.m. local time on Sunday. However, airport officials cautioned passengers that there would still be delays and cancellations due to the aftermath of the adverse weather conditions. According to FlightAware, a flight-tracking service, at least 200 flights were canceled on Sunday, following twice that number being canceled the day before. The impact on travel extended beyond air transport, as Deutsche Bahn, the operator of Germany’s railways, recommended customers planning to depart from or arrive at Munich’s main train station to postpone their travel plans until Monday.
