S. N. Goenka, whose full name is Satya Narayan Goenka, was an influential Indian meditation teacher and the founder of the Vipassana Meditation as taught by him in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin. He was born on January 30, 1924, in Myanmar (formerly Burma) and passed away on September 29, 2013, in India.

S. N. Goenka was instrumental in popularizing Vipassana meditation, which is a traditional form of meditation that focuses on self-observation and insight. He learned Vipassana meditation in Myanmar and then introduced it to people around the world, teaching the technique through meditation retreats and courses.

His teachings emphasized the importance of mindfulness, self-awareness, and the cultivation of inner peace through meditation. S. N. Goenka’s approach to Vipassana was secular and non-sectarian, making it accessible to people of all backgrounds and beliefs.

S. N. Goenka’s impact on the spread of Vipassana meditation has been significant, and his organization, the Vipassana International Academy, continues to offer courses and retreats to people interested in learning this meditation technique. His legacy lives on through the many students and practitioners who continue to benefit from his teachings.
